Early Music Life of Kegite (Kegite Biography)
The kegites club, also known as the palmwine club, is Nigeria’s most popular socio-cultural club. The club began at the University of Ile-Ife (now known as Obafemi Awolowo University) and was formally established in 1998. (1962). The club’s first president was Late Professor Olusegun Adesina. Since its inception, the club has undergone numerous transformations. For example, the club had its first female member in the person of L.S.F Dupe Ajayi, who was the first female to join the club in (1968). The club began spreading to other schools in Nigeria in 1974, with Ilya Du Tractor (federal college of Agriculture AkureOndo state Nigeria) being the first Ilya to receive a keg of office (accreditation) from the world headquarters.
Chief Anthony UzodinmaOgidi became the first and only Igbo man to be appointed as a world chief in 1986, and it was during his one-year reign that the club’s name was changed from palm wine drunkards club to KEGITES club. This change was made primarily because members of the club were perceived to be drunk and irresponsible. The club’s motto was also changed from Palm wine, the foundation of African unity and world peace, to Unity in Diversity!
Kegites Club has remained one Supreme Club since its inception, with branches in almost all higher learning institutions in Nigeria and around the world. As of today, the club has over 100 Ilyasis in Nigeria and around the world. Igbo yoruba gyrations
