Stanley O Iyonawan is a Nigerian musician and songwriter specialising in early music, a genre encompassing medieval, Renaissance and Baroque music. He was born in Edo State, Nigeria, and belongs to the Esan tribe. At a young age, he developed an interest in early music, when he heard recordings of European composers such as Josquin des Prez, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina and Claudio Monteverdi. He learned to play various instruments, such as the lute, the harpsichord and the recorder, and studied music theory and history.
He also explored the musical traditions of his own tribe and other African cultures, and incorporated elements of them into his compositions and performances. He has released several early music albums, solo and with his ensemble, The Esan Consort. He is widely regarded as one of the leading figures of early music in Africa, and has received international recognition and awards for his work.
