The Aye Axe Men are a Nigerian musical group that emerged in the late 1970s as part of the neo-traditional movement. They are known for their fusion of highlife, juju, and Afrobeat genres, as well as their use of traditional instruments such as the talking drum, the shekere, and the axe. The group was founded by Oluwaseun Adeyemi, who adopted the stage name Aye Axe Man, meaning “the one who speaks with an axe”. He was inspired by his father, who was a woodcutter and a musician. Aye Axe Man started playing music at a young age, learning from his father and other local musicians. He formed his first band, The Young Stars, when he was 15 years old.
He later joined forces with other talented musicians such as Femi Kuti, King Sunny Ade, and Ebenezer Obey to form The Aye Axe Men. The group gained popularity in Nigeria and abroad for their energetic performances and socially conscious lyrics. They sang about topics such as corruption, injustice, poverty, and unity. Some of their hit songs include “Axe of Freedom”, “No Be Lie”, “One Love”, and “African Pride”. The Aye Axe Men are considered one of the pioneers of modern Nigerian music and have influenced many artists across Africa and beyond.
