Sunmisola Agbebi Early Music Life (Sunmisola Agbebi Biography Tribe & Genre of Music i.e The Type of Music)
Sunmisola Agbebi is a Nigerian singer and songwriter who specializes in early music, a genre of classical music that covers the medieval, renaissance and baroque periods. She was born in Lagos, Nigeria, to a Yoruba father and an Igbo mother. She grew up listening to traditional Nigerian music, as well as western classical music and gospel. She started singing in her church choir at the age of six, and later joined a local early music ensemble. She developed a passion for early music and its historical and cultural context, and decided to pursue a career in this field. She studied music at the University of Lagos, where she majored in voice and minored in musicology.
She also received training from renowned early music experts from Europe and America, who visited Nigeria as part of cultural exchange programs. She graduated with honors in 2019, and released her debut album, “Voices of the Past”, in 2020. The album features songs from various early music composers, such as Hildegard von Bingen, Josquin des Prez, Claudio Monteverdi and Henry Purcell, sung in their original languages and accompanied by period instruments. The album received critical acclaim and won several awards, including the Nigerian Music Award for Best Classical Album. Sunmisola Agbebi is currently working on her second album, which will focus on African early music traditions. She hopes to promote early music as a genre that can appeal to diverse audiences and enrich their musical experience.
