Onyeka Onwenu Early Music Life (Onyeka Onwenu Biography Tribe & Genre of Music i.e The Type of Music)

Onyeka Onwenu is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, actress, journalist, politician and activist. She is known as the “Elegant Stallion” and has been a prominent figure in the Nigerian music industry for over four decades.

Onwenu was born on January 31, 1952 in Obosi, Anambra State, to D.K. Onwenu, an educationist and politician, and Hope Onwenu, a teacher. She lost her father in a car accident when she was four years old and was raised by her mother who faced challenges from her husband’s family.

Onwenu obtained a BA in International Relations and Communication from Wellesley College, Massachusetts, and an MA in Media Studies from The New School for Social Research, New York. She worked as a tour guide for the United Nations before returning to Nigeria in 1980 to serve with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).

Onwenu began her music career in 1981 while still working with the NTA, releasing her debut album For the Love of You, a pop album that featured an orchestral cover of Johnny Nash’s “Hold Me Tight”. Her second album Endless Life was produced by Sonny Okosun. Both albums were released on the EMI label.

Onwenu’s first album with Polygram, In The Morning Light, was released in 1984. It featured the track “Masterplan” written by her close friend Tyna Onwudiwe who also contributed to Onwenu’s BBC/NTA documentary Nigeria, A Squandering of Riches which exposed corruption and environmental degradation in Nigeria.

Onwenu has recorded over 20 albums in different genres of music, including pop, reggae, gospel, highlife and Afrobeat. She has collaborated with various artists such as King Sunny Ade, Bongos Ikwue, Shina Peters, Sunny Neji and Wizkid. She has also written and performed several songs for movies and television shows such as The Lion King (1994), Conspiracy (1999), Half of a Yellow Sun (2013) and The Wedding Party (2016).

Onwenu is also an accomplished actress who has starred in several Nollywood films such as Not Your Wealth (1999), Rising Moon (2005), Widow’s Cot (2006) and The Amazing Grace (2006). She has won several awards for her acting, including the African Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

Onwenu is also a social and political activist who has advocated for human rights, women empowerment, peace and national unity. She was appointed as the chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture in 2010 and as the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development in 2013. She also contested for a seat in the House of Representatives in 2015 under the People’s Democratic Party but lost to Tony Nwoye of the All Progressives Congress.

Onwenu is a mother of two children whom she adopted after her divorce from her first husband. She has never revealed the identity of her second husband whom she married secretly. She is a devout Christian who converted from Islam after experiencing a vision of Jesus Christ.

Onwenu is widely regarded as one of the most influential and respected female artists in Nigeria and Africa. She has received numerous honours and awards for her contributions to music, film, journalism and social causes. Some of these include the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR), the Nigerian Music Awards Lifetime Achievement Award, the Nigerian Entertainment Awards Icon Award and the City People Movie Lifetime Achievement Award.
