Tunji Oyelana Early Music Life (Tunji Oyelana Biography Tribe & Genre of Music i.e The Type of Music)
Tunji Oyelana is a Nigerian musician, actor and social critic. He was born in 1940 in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State. He belongs to the Yoruba ethnic group, one of the largest in Nigeria. He started his musical career in the early 1960s, playing a fusion of highlife, afrobeat, jazz and folk music. He was influenced by artists like Fela Kuti, Victor Olaiya, Ebenezer Obey and Haruna Ishola. He formed his own band, The Benders, in 1965 and recorded several albums with them.
He also collaborated with other musicians such as King Sunny Ade, Orlando Julius and Segun Bucknor. He is known for his witty and satirical lyrics addressing Nigeria’s social and political issues. He is regarded as one of the pioneers of Nigerian popular music and a legend of the afrobeat genre.
